Research and Development of smallholder livestock systems

This has got six main components namely:

1. Improved Goat Production

GART develops and improves goat production systems by crossing the pure Boer He-goat with indigenous goats that are commonly reared by local farmers. The major improvement is on the size and tolerance to diseases. The improved goats are availed to smallholder farmers at competitive prices.

2. Development of Smallholder Dairy Production.

This focuses on demonstrative dairy farming. Farmers and students are exposed to the management of improved dairy cows. Some dairy management technologies include breeding, feeding, disease control, and calf rearing. Improved yearling dairy bulls are made available for sale to smallholder farmers.

3. Improved Local Chicken Production.

Improved breeds of chickens under focus are Boschveld and Astrolops. These are multiplied and made available to smallholder farmers. Indigenous Chicken breeds including the Frizzled, Chihuli (dwarf), Necked Neck (Kalokoni), Chibalankanga (Guinefowl Feathered) and Matoloshi (Feathered Feet) are currently under development .  The purpose is to make available improved Indigenous Chickens for further production to enhance household protein security and income generation. Training can be provided on demand basis to farmers, extension officers and students in Indigenous Chicken management focussing on housing, feeding, indigenous diseases control and breeding.

4. Fingerling Production

This programme aims at supporting smallholder fish farmers with quality sex reversed fingerlings. GART has capacity to produce up to 2.5 million fingerlings per annum.

5. Pasture and forage seed maintenance Involves pasture crop and forage seed maintenance of both grasses and legumes. Available species include:
Grasses Legumes
Rhodes grass Stylo graham
Panicum maximum Jack bean
Buffel grass Tephrosia
Bana grass Red sunhemp
Green gold Centrocema
Bracharia molatu

6. GART Batoka Livestock Development Centre (LDC)

This is the main stay GART ranch for breeding both small and large livestock. Breeding techniques used at the centre include; Embryo transfers, Artificial Insermination and conventional bull mounting. Pure boran breeds are bred and availed to small holder beef cattle farmers as heifers and steers. Pure Friesian and Jersey breeds are bred and availaed to smallholder dairy farmers as steers and heifers. In addition, first felio generation (F1) crosses between Boran & Friesian and Boran & Jersey are also bred and availed to small holder dairy farmers.
