Unlocking the Future of Agriculture with Satellite Technology!
GART in partnership with AKTC hosted a workshop on “Earth Observation Supporting Food Security and Water Management in Africa by hyperspectral and thermal satellite information”. In the workshop experts from the European Space Agency (ESA) and GART/AKTC Private sector partners shared information on how Satellite Technoology can help in detecting crop water stress, real-time crop performance for yield estimates among others. The tehnology can also help farmers optimise irrigation and ensure reduced water wastage.
Participants included staff from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Zambia Academy of Sciences, Zambia Agriculture Research Institute, NRDC, University of Zambia, FAO, Commercial Farmers, among others.
Three permanent secretaries (Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and Provincial Administration Southern Province) toured GART LDC in Batoka. The PSs had a glimpse of on-going works including the newly installed center pivot, renovated guest house and research offices, the National Pastures and Livestock Fair site and the Zesco 11kv power supply for the irrigation systems.
